The Causeway is ninety minutes from Belfast. The rest of the coast is the reason to stay out all day.
There is no train to the stones and the bus takes half the morning, which is why almost everybody goes by coach. Three shapes of coast day, what each one costs to board, and how far up the A2 it gets you.
The days out more people book than anything else in Northern Ireland.

Belfast explains itself better than any guidebook does.
A cab through the Falls and the Shankill, a walk past the gable walls, the yard that built the Olympic class. The city’s own history is the thing people come for, and it is told first-hand.
Half of Westeros is within an hour of Belfast.
Ballintoy harbour was the Iron Islands. The Dark Hedges was the Kingsroad. The studio at Banbridge keeps the sets, the costumes and the throne itself. Most of it sits on the same coast road as the Causeway, which is why the two get booked together.

What a day out in Northern Ireland actually costs.
Every tour on the site, grouped by price. A good share of the best of Northern Ireland comes in under the cost of dinner in Belfast.

Six kinds of day out, from the peace walls to the rope bridge.
Northern Ireland is compact enough that the choice is not where to go but what kind of day to have. Basalt and cliffs, a cab through the estates, a film set, a shipyard, the glens, or a gable wall.
Three things you can only do in Northern Ireland.
Coastlines and castles turn up all over these islands. A pavement of hexagons, a cab tour of a divided city told by the people who lived it, and a working film studio full of Westeros do not.

The Giant’s Causeway
Sixty million years ago a lava flow cooled slowly enough to crack into columns, and about forty thousand of them run down into the sea below Bushmills. The stones themselves are free to walk on; the visitor centre, the car park and the coach that gets you there are what cost money. Go at the ends of the day and the light along the Antrim coast does most of the work.

The Black Taxi Tour
The cabs ran as a bus service when the buses stopped running, and the drivers still come from the roads they take you down. An hour covers the Falls and the Shankill, the murals on both sides and the gates in the peace line that still close at night. Drivers answer questions directly, and the point of the format is that you ask them.

The Studio Tour
When the production wrapped, the sets did not go into a skip. The throne room, Winterfell’s great hall and several thousand costumes are laid out at Banbridge, half an hour south of Belfast, with the original props and the paint still on them. Entry is a timed ticket, and most people pair it with the locations up on the coast.

Four bookings in Northern Ireland that will not wait.
Most of this country can be sorted the night before over a pint. These four run on timed slots, capped crossings and a weather forecast that takes no interest in your plans.
- 01Game of Thrones Studio Tour Admission TicketEntry is a timed slot and the sets are forty minutes south of Belfast, so the ticket and the transport have to be booked as one thing.
- 02Titanic Belfast Entrance Ticket: Titanic Visitor Experience Including SS NomadicEntry runs on timed slots, and the museum sits beside the cruise terminal. The mornings a ship is in are the ones that fill.
- 03Giants Causeway, Rope Bridge, Carrickfergus Castle and Dark Hedges TourThe bridge crossing is a timed ticket capped at a handful of people at a time, and it closes outright when the wind gets up. The coast days that include it run to that.
- 04McConnell’s Distillery Experience with TastingTastings run to a fixed schedule with a small number of seats at each sitting, and the last one of the day goes first.
The coast road is no fun in horizontal rain. Belfast is.
Weather here arrives sideways and leaves in twenty minutes, but a wet day on an exposed headland is a wasted one. Move the coast to tomorrow and spend today under a roof: the ship, a still house, a kitchen, or a cab with the heater on.
Belfast eats well now, and the still houses came back with it.
Twelve local dishes walked round the city centre, a tasting in a distillery that reopened after a century shut, soda farls and champ eaten where they are actually made. The kitchens caught up with the rest of the city fast.
By the thing you came for
By how you want to spend it — coach, cab, boots or bike
Belfast, the shipyard, the coast road: the run almost everybody does.
